Price says that 3 million papers have been uploaded to Academia.edu, and Madisch says that 14 million are accessible through ResearchGate (although he will not say how many of those have been automatically scraped from freely accessible places elsewhere). An unpublished study conducted by computer scientists Madian Khabsa at Pennsylvania State University in University Park and Mike Thelwall at the University of Wolverhampton, UK, suggests that by August this year, the full texts of around one-quarter of all molecular-biology papers published in 2012 were available from ResearchGate. Perhaps wisely, administrators at some institutions have decided that few researchers can be trusted to be as assiduous as Faulkes in updating their various profiles. Gao, Luo, and Zhang (2012) reviewed literature about Twitter published between 2008 and 2011. They concluded that Twitter allowed students to participate with each other in class (by creating an informal “back channel”), and extend discussion outside of class time. They also reported that students used Twitter to get up-to-date news and connect with professionals in their field. Students reported that microblogging encouraged students to “participate at a higher level”.[233] Because the posts cannot exceed 140 characters, students were required to express ideas, reflect, and focus on important concepts in a concise manner. The research indicated that many students did not actually participate in the discussions, “they just lurked” online and watched the other participants.[233]

No one saw Meerkat coming, especially Twitter. Meerkat was using Twitter’s API to give users instant access to all their followers through the app (Twitter eventually shut down that feature). If you had a lot of Twitter followers, that made Meerkat instantly powerful. You could tell thousands of people that you were going live right now. It was instant gratification, on both sides.

Kik is a free instant messaging app that’s very popular with teens and young adults. Users can chat with each other one-on-one or in groups by using Kik usernames (instead of phone numbers). Digital marketing doesn’t differentiate between push and pull marketing tactics (or what we might now refer to as ‘inbound’ and ‘outbound’ methods). In other words, digital outbound tactics aim to push a marketing message directly in front of as many people as possible online — regardless of whether it’s relevant or welcomed. For example, the irritating, flashing banner ads you see at the top of lots of websites try to push a product or promotion onto people who aren’t necessarily ready to receive it.

Other privacy concerns with employers and social media are when employers use social media as a tool to screen a prospective employee. This issue raises many ethical questions that some consider an employer’s right and others consider discrimination. Except in the states of California, Maryland, and Illinois, there are no laws that prohibit employers from using social media profiles as a basis of whether or not someone should be hired.[121] Title VII also prohibits discrimination during any aspect of employment including hiring or firing, recruitment, or testing.[122] Social media has been integrating into the workplace and this has led to conflicts within employees and employers.[107] Particularly, Facebook has been seen as a popular platform for employers to investigate in order to learn more about potential employees. This conflict first started in Maryland when an employer requested and received an employee’s Facebook username and password. State lawmakers first introduced legislation in 2012 to prohibit employers from requesting passwords to personal social accounts in order to get a job or to keep a job. This led to Canada, Germany, the U.S. Congress and 11 U.S. states to pass or propose legislation that prevents employers’ access to private social accounts of employees.[108]

Thank you for your post, and I am very sorry for what happened to your child. You correctly point out that no amount of monitoring, including using software, can cover all the bases. There are just too many things out there and too many creeps willing to take advantage. I’m a “computer guy” with all kinds of filters, etc. on, but my daughter was given a thumb drive with executable VPN software to beat OPENDNS and my firewall settings. I only caught it by happenstance. So ignore any “bad parent” comments; those people just don’t know.

The film opens with a lengthy scene of dialogue between Mark and his girlfriend. What’s so unique about it is that you have to listen closely because the scene is jumbled with the chatter of a murmuring pub. And you can hear the background noise louder than you would like to have it or have been used to hearing it in other films. It’s almost like we’re right there with them, listening in. It’s hard to hear comfortably at parts but I find that decision enthralling. Director David Fincher is trying to tell us something here, he’s trying to prepare his audience. He’s telling them to listen up and pay attention because this movie demands it. He uses this same tool later on in the film at a night club where Mark is being taken under the wing of a character with questionable motives. Fincher says once again, listen closely. This is a scene that demands concentration. Read between the lines, Mark is. Why aren’t you?

When mobile messaging apps such as WhatsApp first emerged in 2009, they looked like a threat to mobile carriers. Everyone from Vodafone to Dutch operator KPN was mentioning them in sales calls. With all the updated algorithms, organic content has a tough time reaching the majority of your audience. The last thing you want to do is ignore those who engage and lose out on sending more down your marketing funnel.

What is this film trying to say about my generation? Honestly, I don’t really care much that aspect of it. With the exception of the actors in participation, the rest of the filmmakers were older men who are most likely out of touch. I mean, my generation is inherently out of touch by nature so how could Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher know any better? This is not to say that Sorkin’s script isn’t great or that Fincher’s vision wasn’t coherent, fluid, and interesting to watch. I’m only saying that this film may not be the generation defining film in terms of territory and material, but it is generation defining in terms of acting and character. Eisenberg towers over his contemporaries. I’ve been waiting for an actor like him to come around for a very long time to kind of show the way for the others. I also hope that this film brings the character study back into popular demand. It’s been a few years now since The Social Network was released and films just aren’t seeming to catch on. It was a special kind of film and I guess we’re not headed toward a new renaissance but at least it existed. A reminder of what the medium can accomplish. It focused on and examined a character who was not only a complicated one but one that shared a great likeness to it’s coeval and modern audience. In the idea that Mark as a character is representative of my generation’s cold resolve, the film is truly generation defining. It might not be the film my generation claimed but it’s the one it deserved. It may not be an exact interpretation of my generation but it makes for a damn good silhouette of it.

There is little question that Mr. Vaynerchuk is a master at promoting himself. But what about his clients? They tend to regard him as a colorful savant, pointing to his immense online following and his track record in spotting companies like Twitter and Facebook, both of which he invested in long before they went public. (You hear less about Yobongo, a social discovery app that he also “spotted” but that flopped.)

What is this film trying to say about my generation? Honestly, I don’t really care much about that aspect of it. I mean, my generation is inherently out of touch by nature so how could Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher know any better? This is not to say that Sorkin’s script isn’t or that Fincher’s vision wasn’t coherent, fluid, and interesting to watch. I’m only saying that this film may not be the generation defining film in terms of territory and material, but it is generation defining in terms of acting and character. Eisenberg towers over his contemporaries. I’ve been waiting for an actor like him to come around for a very long time to kind of show the way for the others. I also hope that this film brings the character study back into popular demand. It’s been a few years now since The Social Network was released and films just aren’t seeming to catch on. It was a special kind of film and I guess we’re not headed toward a new renaissance but at least it existed. A reminder of what the medium can accomplish. It focused on and examined a character who was not only a complicated one but one that shared a great likeness to it’s coeval and modern audience. In the idea that Mark as a character is representative of my generation’s cold resolve, the film is truly generation defining. In October 2003, 19-year-old Harvard University student Mark Zuckerberg is dumped by his girlfriend Erica Albright.
