Sweepstakes are amongst the most popular social media applications due to their simplicity and viral growth potential. They provide an incentive towards audience participation in the form of prizes, and entice them to share the message with their friends in exchange for additional rewards. Perform a simple action (such as spinning a wheel or using a slot machine) and fill out your details in a form (which feeds a back-end database) and you’re in!

The thing about Tumblr is that things are separated by “tags”. Unless you follow a person who posts content with tags like “nsfw” which is usually used for porn or you look up a tag yourself, you will not come across this content. You can also block tags, or “blacklist” them so that you won’t come across them. There are some great resources like writing activities and tips, craft instructions that are available on Tumblr (and you don’t have to have a blog to go directly to it). The password protected blog is your second blog, but you don’t have to put anything on the first and just post from the second. Those are all tips that I find useful about that website because of its rise in popularity. And about websites giving information to the police: there was an incident that happened in my city where a girl was posting a Gossip-girl like Tumblr blog and it spread. There were students who tried to contact Tumblr support to remove the blog as it had some raunchy pictures, but they could not do anything about it since they were not the ones actually in the pictures. I know that the blog was taken down after someone called the police — it was actually child pornography due to the nature of some of the pictures. They were able to track the student down and she ended up getting expelled.

Great list. KakaoTalk is very popular in Asia, and with Asian American kids at my school. We use it all the time to communicate with my daughter in Korea and our former exchange student in Japan. Kids love all the emoji, but be aware, the cute ones aren’t free! I’m not sure about privacy settings, etc., because my daughter is over 21:)
Widely mocked at the time, Facebook’s $1 billion acquisition of Instagram in 2012 has proved prescient. Same with its $22 billion purchase of WhatsApp, which many Americans had not even heard of when Facebook announced the deal in 2014. Yet Facebook has not confined its expansion to the purely social realm. Its $2 billion purchase of Oculus VR puzzled even some of those who grasped the logic of the Instagram and WhatsApp deals.

As the world is becoming increasingly connected via the power of the Internet, political movements, including militant groups, have begun to see social media as a major organizing and recruiting tool. Furthermore, social media’s role in democratizing media participation, which proponents herald as ushering in a new era participatory democracy, with all users able to contribute news and comments, may fall short of the ideals. Social media has been championed as allowing anyone with an Internet connection to become a content creator and empowering the “active audience”. But international survey data suggest online media audience members are largely passive consumers, while content creation is dominated by a small number of users who post comments and write new content.:78 Others argue that the effect of social media will vary from one country to another, with domestic political structures playing a greater role than social media in determining how citizens express opinions about “current affairs stories involving the state”. According to the “Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2013”, the percent of online news users who blog about news issues ranges from 1–5%. Greater percentages use social media to comment on news, with participation ranging from 8% in Germany to 38% in Brazil. But online news users are most likely to just talk about online news with friends offline or use social media to share stories without creating content.:78

From the first sentence, the first word, the first nervily in-drawn breath, this compulsively watchable picture announces itself as the unmistakable work of Aaron Sorkin. His whip-smart, mile-a-minute dialogue made The West Wing deeply addictive on TV, and after uncertain works such as Charlie Wilson’s War and the strange, small-screen drama Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip – in which Sorkin’s distinctive, faintly martyred seriousness was bafflingly applied to the backstage shenanigans of a fictional television comedy – this writer is triumphantly back on form. He’s found an almost perfect subject: the creation of the networking website Facebook, and the backstabbing legal row among the various nerds, geeks, brainiacs and maniacs about who gets the credit and the cash.
