Hi JHart! As a fellow teen I’m here to advocte and encourage to usage of social media for your 14 year old daughter. I personally had a very monitored Facebook since I was 10 (mainly since I lived overseas to contact other family members). When I was 13, I was introduced to Instagram. Since then, I’ve used it to update my friends on my whereabouts (since I’m still constantly traveling) and keep up to date on their whereabouts. If you are concerned about your teen’s safety on Instagram, here are some tips I’ve learned: 1) Only use your first name as your “real name”. Instagram doesn’t require you to put both names. 2) Careful what you put in the bio (it’s always going to be public). I have some attributes about me (World traveller. Foodie. Dog Lover) and a cute quote and some emojis on mine. Nothing too specific about me. 3) My account is set on private. 4) I do not share Instagram photos with the location turned on unless I know I will not be going back to that place for a while (ex. you’re day at disneyworld or something). 5) My Instagram profile picture uses a cheesy, but cute filter. The profile picture doesn’t matter too much since people cannot and make it bigger like they can in say Kik. 6) Your username should not be your full name. Mine is my first name and then something else. I personally do not really see any other difficulties that could go along with the app as seeing it’s a photo uploading and viewing media. Instagram has made lots of effort in taking out spam accounts and there is little to inappropriate material (atleast I haven’t seen much- especially lately, in my 2 years of using the app). Anyways, I hope I helped!

It can be easy to forget now, but there was a time when group texting wasn’t natively supported in iMessage. Good thing we had GroupMe, which made it possible for groups of friends to seamlessly communicate in one conversation. Better yet, it was cross-platform, so you could message friends whether they were on Android, BlackBerry or who-knows-what. Now group texts are part of iMessage (not to mention every other messaging app) so GroupMe isn’t quite as relevant as it once was. But with advanced notification controls and built-in GIF search, it’s still one of the best ways to keep tabs on giant group message threads.
Social media content is generated through social media interactions done by the users through the site. There has always been a huge debate on the ownership of the content on social media platforms because it is generated by the users and hosted by the company. Added to this is the danger to security of information, which can be leaked to third parties with economic interests in the platform, or parasites who comb the data for their own databases. The author of Social Media Is Bullshit, Brandon Mendelson, claims that the “true” owners of content created on social media sites only benefits the large corporations who own those sites and rarely the users that created them.
When I went rock climbing for the first time, I had no idea what I was doing. My friends and I were complete newbies about ropes and rappelling and every other bit of jargon and technique that goes with climbing. We saw others doing it spectacularly well. We were thrilled at the thought of reaching the top of the climbing wall; we had no idea how to get there.

In the context of the social web, engagement means that customers and stakeholders, such as consumer advocacy groups and groups that criticize companies (e.g., lobby groups or advocacy organizations) are active participants rather than passive viewers. Social media use in a business or political context allows all consumers/citizens to express and share an opinion about a company’s products, services or business practices, or a government’s actions. Each participating customer or non-customer (or citizen) who is participating online via social media becomes part of the marketing department (or a challenge to the marketing effort), as other customers read their positive or negative comments or reviews. Getting consumers and potential consumers (or citizens) to be engaged online is fundamental to successful social media marketing. With the advent of social media marketing, it has become increasingly important to gain customer interest in products and services, which can eventually be translated into buying behavior (or voting or donating behavior in a political context). New online marketing concepts of engagement and loyalty have emerged which aim to build customer participation and brand reputation.
This is a film which simply shouldn’t work, but it does – magnificently. A story centred on a teenager who becomes the world’s youngest billionaire, a web site that reaches a million users in two years, and a cast of real life characters with names like Zuckerberg and Winklevoss just shouldn’t be possible. A convoluted tale of raw conflict on the origins of a new type of web site should not lend itself to an expensive movie as opposed to a television documentary. It succeeds because it is not about the technology but about creativity and conflict and about friendship and betrayal. It succeeds because of a magical combination of accomplished direction, scintillating dialogue and superb acting.
